Today I’m sharing some of my favourite mess free sensory play ideas. We all know that sensory play is brilliant for toddlers and babies as it stimulates, educates, and helps them to develop their fine and gross motor skills. That being said, a lot of parents and carers can be put off by the amount of mess that comes from playing with paints and other popular sensory play materials. If that sounds familiar, this is the perfect post for you.

Not all sensory play ideas have to be messy, and it’s not all just about touch either. This is especially great news for us work from home mums, trying to meet our kids’ needs, while also juggling working from home. So keep reading for 10 of the best mess free sensory play ideas for toddlers.

Mess Free Sensory Play Ideas for Toddlers

Sensory play isn’t just about touch, it incorporates all the senses as well as encouraging children to explore and develop vital fine and gross motor skills. Here are 10 of the best mess-free sensory play ideas for toddlers that provide hours of great fun and stimulation, without the cleanup!

Mess Free Sensory Play – Musical Instruments

Sensory play is about so much more than just touch; it incorporates all the senses, including hearing. With this in mind, creating your own DIY mess-free musical instruments for your toddlers is a fantastic way to help them develop their gross motor skills and enjoy a fun sensory experience.

Use plastic bottles and add some rice before glueing the lid shut to create a shaker or turn your pots and pans upside down and offer your toddler some wooden spoons to create their very own drum kit.

Musical Instruments are one of the easiest mess free sensory play ideas.

Zipper Board

When it comes to mess-free sensory play ideas for toddlers, you can’t beat a good zipper board. These are so cheap and easy to make, plus they provide so much entertainment and sensory stimulation, as well as helping to develop those important fine motor skills.

In order to create this easy sensory play experience for your toddler you will need some sturdy cardboard, a hot glue gun, and some zippers. Zippers come in different lengths, sizes, and colours and can be found in haberdasheries and online shops. Use different coloured and sized zippers to create an interesting sensory experience; you can also try glueing the zippers at different angles for more fun.

DIY Discovery Bottles

Discovery bottles are so simple and easy to make, however, for such a small amount of preparation time, they make incredibly fun sensory play items for toddlers. The idea behind discovery bottles is simple: the bottle allows toddlers to see the materials inside but doesn’t allow them to actually touch and make a mess with the contents.

Discovery bottle materials can range from dry ingredients, such as pom poms, pasta, rice, and ribbons, to wet mixes, such as water mixed with oil and glitter to create a DIY snow-globe effect.

Homemade Play Dough

Homemade playdough isn’t as messy as you may think, and the best thing of all is that it’s so cheap to make at home. Toddlers love play dough and there are so many additions to play dough play that can increase sensory experiences at playtime. For instance, you can try adding spices to your playdough, such as cinnamon, for a Christmas-themed play dough activity, or you can use food colouring to dye your play dough bright colours.

You can also add additional play materials, such as pompoms, acorns, conkers, and small plastic toys. My top tip for using playdoh is to ensure it’s kept well away from carpet and soft furnishings, to make the clean-up quick and easy.

Mess-free Painting with Ziploc bags

One of the best mess-free sensory play ideas for toddlers is the mess-free Ziploc bag painting experience.

This little craft idea allows toddlers to play with paint without getting their hands, or clothes, dirty. Simply grab yourself a Ziploc bag and cut some paper or card to size so that it fits snugly inside. Then add a few dollops of paint and zip up the bag (be sure to remove excess air from the bag). Now your toddler can use their fingers to push the paint around and create art without making a mess. MotherGeek shared more info and photos of this mess-free messy play idea on her blog.

Cotton Ball Sorting

Cotton Balls are soft and squishy, making them perfect for little hands. It’s easy to pull cotton balls apart or scoop them up using spoons and other utensils. This mess-free sensory idea for kids is especially effective at Christmas when you want to create a snow-themed sensory activity.

Pom Poms and Kitchen Utensils

In a large box or tub, pour in your pom poms and add some unusual kitchen utensils. Toddlers love scooping, poking, rolling, and squishing pom poms, plus all the bright colours and different sizes add extra sensory excitement.

Dyed Rice Colour Sorting

It’s so easy to make your own dyed rice for colour sorting, so why not give it a go? You will need some dry rice and some water-based poster paint (you can use food colouring too, but some brands will leave an oily residue that comes off on little hands).

Have you tried dyed rice as a mess free sensory play activity?

Simply squirt some paint into the bag with your dry rice – at this point, you can also add a small amount of PVA glue for added protection. Mix the paint and rice together until everything’s covered and then leave it all on a baking tray to dry overnight. You can also do this using dry pasta shapes instead of dry rice, which may be easier for smaller hands and is definitely less messy.

Tissue Paper Mess Free Sensory Play

When you get deliveries in the post, you usually find that your parcels are wrapped up in tissue paper to keep them safe. My top tip is to save that tissue paper packaging as it is an excellent mess-free sensory play idea for toddlers. Collect it all together and place it in a cardboard box, then allow your toddler to rip, tear, and crumple the tissue paper.

Magnets and Tubes

Don’t throw away your empty toilet roll and kitchen roll tubes! Instead, collect a few and place them in a box or tub with some magnetic wands and small magnetic materials, such as coins or magnetic toys. Use the wand to pass the magnetic toys through the tubes, or use tape to keep the tubes upright whilst you drop down several magnetic items, before pulling them out with the wand.
